1. Authenticity of historic building loss due to material decay. Types, causes, consequences. 2. Wood conservation I. Decay types, insects and fungi, impact of alterations. 3. Wood conservation II. Methods of preservation and maintenance. 4. Wood conservation III. Case studies 5. Stone masonry restoration: decay mechanisms, methods of preservation and conservation. 6. Brick masonry restoration: decay mechanisms, methods of preservation and conservation. 7. Rendering restoration I: Mortar and rendering types, binders, suitability and decay. 8. Rendering restoration II: methods and techniques of restoration and maintenance 9. Conservation design I. Heritage maintenance and conservation philosophy 10. Conservation design II. Translation of legal obligations into design practice 11. Practical assessment of historic building decay - restoration case study 12. Practical conservation design. Learning outcomes
The subject of study is heritage buildings deterioration causes, principles of historic building maintenance, methods of preservation, maintenance and restoration. It critically assesses the impact of alterations of the building structure. Second part of the subject discloses the conservation project design, providing theoretical underpinnings of heritage restoration and conservation processes.
The student acquires knowledge which enables him to analyze the causes of damage of the historical building and to decide for the important steps to restore and rehabilitate it. The student is able to judge the project of the rehabilitation which is presented for scientific evaluation with respect to used methods and comprehensiveness of the documentation.

The student proves in a written seminar paper that he knows and manages the analysis of the causes of construction damages of a specific historical building, offers a method of removal of the causes of damage of the construction and the technology of its repair and rehabilitation.
