1. Aristocracy in the long 19th century as a topic- presentation of essential reference literature on the topic of Czech and foreign origins, source and methodological possibilities of research 2. The importance of ego-documents for research on the nobility of the 19th century 3. A nobleman in the bourgeois century? (The historical excursion, problems, concepts, methods, sources) 4. Preconditions and manifestations of aristocratic lifestyle ( importance of traditions, ancestral memory and conservative thought, stately homes, life cycle, aristocratic pastime), with respect to the source possibilities 5. Selected noble families and their mansions and family archives

Learning outcomes
|
The aim of this optional course is to acquaint students with history of Czech aristocracy in the 19th century and the possibilities of its investigation. Attention will be focused on Czech aristocracy, its character with regard to its transformation as a result of modernization processes in society during the 19th century. Students will get basic knowledge of a noble everyday life, preconditions and manifestations of aristocratic lifestyle, i.e.of significant features of this type of mentality on the example of famous Czech noble families. Students will become familiar with the possibilities of archival research, with the location of important family archives and noble manors in Bohemia, Moravia and Vienna. Noble families related to the North Bohemian Region will be studied in further detail. Students will be presented with different kinds of espec. written sources with so called ego-documents, sources of personal character, in its main focus. Based on these studies students will be introduced to aristocratic lifestyle in the 19 century in the social context of changes of elites and also with regard to period political intentions.
Completion of the course will expand students' knowledge of the aristocracy living and working in Bohemia and Moravia in the 19th century, with an emphasis on the nobility related to the region of Northern Bohemia (eg. Thun-Hohenstein families, Clary-Aldringen, Kinsky, Clam-Galases, Lobkowiczs, the Rohan family etc.) Students will get information on the status of the Czech nobility in political, social and economic history of the "long" 19th century. They will also get knowledge of a life cycle of a nobleman (childhood, upbringing, education, marriage or death of a nobleman), preconditions and manifestations of his/her lifestyle. Students will learn to search for information in available Czech and foreign literature on social history and everyday life in the 19th century. Students will acquire knowledge of preserved archives and various types of source material,particularly with sources of personal nature, such as correspondence, diaries, etc.

Prerequisites

It is assumed that the student is familiar with the history of the Czech lands and the history of art of the 18th and 19th centuries.. Completion of the History of the Czech Modern Age is an advantage.
