Topics of the lectures: 1. - 3. Basic terminology in the historical developments (archive, archives, archivistics, archival sciences, office, registry, record office, administrative archives), issues of archival terminology in domestic and international context. Relation of archives to other memory institutions in an informational society, criteria and ways of selecting and overtaking archives. 4. - 6. Basic principles of filing (provenience versus pertinence), creating and limiting funds (simple and complex, compound funds, overtaking and creating of specialized collections and the so called archival manipulation) 7. - 10. Records of archives and their opening to the public (records JAF or NAD, creating of archival accessibility tools in the context of current legislature, types of archival tools (and creating of "finding aids" in the electronic form), Czech programme for record of archival tools PEVA, administrative funds and their opening to the public, standards of the International Council for Archives for describing of archive funds and possibilities of their application in our conditions, preparation of new basic rules for work with archive material. 11. - 12. Development of archives. Origin and development of archives in Europe in general and their institutionalization (archives in Ancient times, in the Middle Ages, at the beginning of Modern Era, in the Enlightenment of 18th century, archives of the new state forms from the 19th century on, archives and electronic document Archiving in Czech lands (in the European context)/Archivnictví v českých zemích (v evropském kontextu). Development of the National digital archive. 13. - 14. Conservation of archives and archive legislature. Development of archive legislature in Czech lands and its present day accents (details of the present day Act on Archiving and Records Management (499/2004 Coll., as amended), connection to other present-day Czech acts. Specialized archive legislature in selected countries of Europe (France, Germany, Austria, Poland, Slovakia).

The aim of the Introduction into archival science I is to teach the students the basics of the archival theory and methodology in a wider context of Europe and history along with the development of archives from the Middle Ages and their present-day organization. We use - except the special support - materials from conferences, on-line information of the International Council on Archives, Czech Archive Society, etc.).
The student acquires basic knowledge of the methodological and methodical issues on the subject of archive sciences, its organization and legislature in comparison to the context of other European countries. Stress is put on a different paradigm of the subject in the intellectual society of today and thus to a work with digital document, possibilities of its long-term keeping and processing for archive purposes, again in coordination with the latest trends in the world. This knowledge will be of good help for future work in administrative institutions of various kind and levels, in many other memory institutions (libraries, galleries, museums), as well as various "think-tank" institutions which prepare qualified groundwork for decisive organs. The students will be able to react to present-day social needs in the area of data selection and technical protection of long-term depositing as a part of the national cultural heritage. European context and knowledge of languages should enable the students to fluctuate in their profession mainly in the states of European Union.
