Course content
Topics of lectures for the general history: 1. Early Middle Age ethno-genesis and its issues 2. The church and the state in the early Middle Age 3. Suzerainty and feudal system 4. "National" kingdom in the Middle Age? 5. Forms of medieval universalism 6. Year 1000 and the "agrarian" revolution 7. "Modern" state: the king and the estate 8. Problems of the late Middle Age empire: Louis the Bavarian and the Luxembourg concept 9. European crisis and conflicts 10. Discourse of the intellectuals and its political consequences 11. Conciliarism as a phenomenon of its time? 12. European reformation Topics of lectures for general history: 1. Basic problems of periodization of the older Czech history 2. The arrival of the Slavs into Central Europe, issues of the location and the meaning of the so called Samo's empire 3. "Great Moravia" - its role and interpretation in the history of Central Europe 4. The relation to the Czech state to the Empire, the Czech state as the part of the Middle Age Roman empire 5. Czech Reformation as a historical issue 6. Issues of the research of the Czech estate society between the Middle Age and the beginnings of the early Modern Age 7. - 8. Historic and anthropological approach to the history of the Czech Middle Age and the beginnings of the Modern Age 9. Gender as a concept of the research of the history of the Czech Middle Age and the beginnings of the Early Modern Age 10. - 12. "Everydayness" as the concept of research of the history of Czech Middle Age and the beginnings of Modern Age 13. - 14. Final colloquium, evaluation of the students' papers.

Learning outcomes
A two-semester course whose goal is to give the students the knowledge of the selected problems of the modern Medieval studies and studies of early Modern Age. The lectures stress methodology and possibilities of critical interpretation of selected sources to each topic. The goal of the seminar is to tell the students the basic sources and the source editions of the given topics and also to demonstrate the possibilities of their critical analysis and the influence to the professional discourse.
The student can formulate the basic structure of the problem of the topic, he can manage the basic literature and reason the standpoints of the scientific discourse. He knows the basic sources of the given topic and can interpret them in accordance to the principles to the historic methods.
