Learning outcomes
The aim of the subject is to make students acquire basic knowledge of normative Latin grammar in the framework of two semesters (with the possibility of follow-up study). This mainly includes adopting practical skills along with some orientation in the development of Latin language and its cultural role. Therefore, the lectures selectively refer to various Latin texts differing in development and contents. Apart from texts dating to the classical period of the language and with regard to historians? practical needs, the education takes the development of Latin in the post-classical period and the characteristic contemporary types of Latin sources into account.
The graduates are orientated in the basics of Latin morphology and syntax. With the help of dictionaries and other handbooks, they are capable of working with Latin texts of especially historical character. They can independently develop the acquired skills via self-study also in their further work - especially the work with various types of medieval texts and Latin written documents dating to later periods. They are also familiar with the basic types of Latin editions and tools which they can employ in their future study as well as historical work.
