Subject circles of the individual lectures: 1. Basic concepts, the development of sphragistic studies, terminology I 2. Terminology II, sphragistic sources 3. Ruler?s seals in the Czech lands 4. Aristocratic seals in the Czech lands 5. City and townsman?s seals, sphragistics of guilds and other city corporations 6. Sphragistics of other social strata 7. Heraldry: basic concepts, the development of heraldic studies, terminology I 8. Terminology II, heraldic sources 9. Blazoning of coats-of-arms 10. Armorial right. Ruler?s and land coats-of-arms in the Czech lands 11. Coats-of-arms in the aristocratic milieu in the Czech lands 12. Church heraldry 13. City, guild?s and communal heraldry 14. State symbols of Czechoslovakia between 1918 and 1993

Learning outcomes
The subject focuses on the development of sphragistic and heraldic studies in the Czech lands with concern to wider European context, on heraldic and sphragistic terminology, the customs in describing seals and coats-of-arms and on the ruler?s, aristocratic, Church city and communal heraldry and sphragistics, and also on heraldry of the historical lands of the Kingdom of Bohemia and the state symbols of Czechoslovakia and the Czech Republic between 1918 and 1993.
The graduates display knowledge of heraldic and sphragistic terminology, sources and literature, blazoning of coats-of-arms and seals, basic heraldic figures and tinctures, the beginnings of heraldry, the development of the ruler?s, aristocratic, Church, city and guild?s heraldry and sphragistics in the Czech lands, heraldic symbols of the historical lands of the Kingdom of Bohemia and the state symbols of Czechoslovakia and the Czech Republic between 1918 and 1993. They are also capable of independently working with heraldic and sphragistic artefacts, describe and evaluate them and incorporate them into individual historical contexts.
Prerequisites
Students are expected to be orientated in auxiliary historical sciences, history of state administration and history of the Czech lands. They are also expected to have solid knowledge of basics of German language.

Assessment methods and criteria

The students are required to submit a paper on a selected publication on either heraldry or sphragistics and to pass a closing written test.
