The history of modern times in the Czech lands is divided into two parts. The first part encompasses the period between 1648 and 1848, i.e. from the end of the Thirty Years? War to the early 19th century. The aim of the subject is to present the main issues of the history of the given period in the wide context of the history of the entire Habsburg monarchy. This mainly concerns its foreign policy with all its consequences for the domestic affairs, and following the uneven and specific character of development of the individual part of the monarchy. Emphasis is laid on the issues the solution of which is in the focus of both local and global historiography. The second part covers the period beginning with the revolution of 1848-9 and climaxing with the 1918 establishment of the independent Czechoslovak state. Students will be introduced to the main issues of our history during this period, again presented in the wider context of the history of the entire Habsburg monarchy, its position on the international scene and the problem of its internal arrangement. Special attention is paid to the nationalist issue, perceived in a wider context. This particularly concerns the Czech-German relations in our countries, in the Habsburg monarchy as well as outside it, the relations to other Slavic nations and the beginnings of the Czech-French relations. The characteristic issue during this period to be also presented is the fight for democratic rights and political emancipation of all social strata. High emphasis will hence be laid on the development of civic society.
The graduates acquire the capability of logical following-up with the preceding time period. From both the aspect of time and space, they demonstrate knowledge of wide connections to the analysis of the preceding and of the assumptions of future developments. They are not only orientated in the given issue in the framework of the historical development of the Czech lands but are also able to compare them with other parts of the Habsburg monarchy and Europe. They adopt the skill of analysing relevant sources, mainly focusing on evaluating them and at the same time keeping critical distance. They acquire an overview of historiography relating to the followed period and focusing on the most recent scientific results, and knowledge of the preceding development of solving the corresponding issues. Yet another part of the acquired expertise is successful orientation in particular historical events. Students moreover receive the capability of incorporating the processed material into wider - European / global - context and, on this basis, cooperate with researchers and scholars abroad. They are also competent in developing and cooperating in international projects.
