1. What is history, does history have meaning, does it make sense to study history? 2. Assigning a seminar paper topic and how to write it, citation techniques in academic historical work 3. - 4. Fundamentals of historical method, bibliography, source editions; sources and literature - basic introduction, what is source criticism (external and internal criticism)

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to familiarize students with history as a scientific discipline, its place in the system of sciences and its internal structure, organizational structures in the Czech Republic, sources and professional literature, and the methods used in history. The result should also be the acquisition of basic practical skills in historical work.
The students will acquire basic knowledge about the subject.

Credit will be awarded based on: A) attendance at lectures B) active participation in discussions C) completion of 2 assignments via Moodle: 1) The student will discuss the title of the topic and the main research question with the instructor. The topic must be narrowed down/specified as much as possible (thematically, temporally, spatially). After approval of the topic and question, the student will prepare and upload the Seminar Paper Assignment to Moodle (the MS Word file will include the following items: - student's name, title of the seminar paper, abstract (approx. 10 lines: time and space definition; main and sub-research questions/objectives; anticipated methods). 2) After approval of the previous task, students will conduct research of sources and professional literature on the chosen topic. They will submit it to Moodle as a file (MS Word/OpenOffice) "Research" according to the bibliographic conventions of the Czech Historical Journal. The file must include the following items: student's name; title of the seminar paper; at least 2 unpublished or published sources; at least 5 specialist books or theses, 1 popular science book, 2 studies from conference proceedings, 1 journal study from WoS or Scopus, 1 journal study from JSTOR, and 5 databases used (in addition to the mandatory WoS, Scopus, and JSTOR). Some items may be replaced with others upon agreement with the instructor. D) Successful completion of the online credit test.
