Course content
Topics of lectures: 1. Medieval Archaeology and methods of its work. 2. Medieval Archaeology and the beginning of Slavic settlement in Czech lands. 3. Medieval Archaeology and the history of Great Moravia. 4. Medieval Archaeology and the beginnings of the Premysliden state. 5. Development of early Medieval castle centres; Prague and its development. 6. Development of Medieval rural settlement 7. Medieval Archaeology of the beginnings of feudal residences. 8. Research of vanished medieval towns I (Hradišťko u Davle, Kynšperk nad Ohří, Staré Mýto, Žďár nad Sázavou) 9. Research of vanished medieval towns II (Děčín, Sezimovo Ústí) 10. Statement of the researches in the historical town cores (Žatec, Most) 11. Medieval Archaeology to the issue of production and crafts. 12. Archaeological material findings and spiritual culture of the Middle Age 13. Medieval Archaeology on the issue of long-distance contacts and ethnic relations 14. Treasures in a different view

Learning outcomes
The course introduces the discipline of Medieval Archaeology. The students will learn about the development of the subject, its methods and basic results which the Czech Medieval Archaeology reached in comparison with European and Central European situation. The exam will prove knowledge acquired in the course and by studying the literature and a recommended literature.
As a following to the course of Prehistory (part of the studies in the Bachelor programme) the students get a better notion of the work with medieval archaeological material sources and the possibilities and limitations of use of archaeological findings in the study of Medieval history.
