Main topics for full-time study: 1.Elementary characteristics of sources on history of Germans in the Czech lands 2.Political movements and parties 3.Question of language and attempts on Czech -German settlement 4.Economy 5.Club life 6.Education and science Combined study and tutorials: Work with sources: records from the congress of representatives of German constitutional clubs and towns in Teplice, speeches and memories of Ernst von Plener, selected documents on language question and Czech-German settlement, selected articles from German periodicals and their confrontation with Czech periodicals,records from meeting of a chamber of commerce and trade in Liberec, proclamation of an exhibition committee for Czech-German Exhibition in Liberec 1906

Learning outcomes
The course aims to bring information about elementary sources on history of German speaking population in the Czech lands in the period 1848 - 1918. On the basis of analysis of the most important or characteristic sources to extend students´ knowledge of this issue. In the course we will deal with political, economical and cuultural history. Attention will be drawn to the view of Germans from the Czech side. Particular topics will be always presented generally and selected ones then analysed in detail through work with respective sources. Besides the sources students will be informed about secondary literature. Student will acquire general knowledge about the most important sources for history of German-Czech population in the Czech lands in the years 1848 - 1918, he/she will be able to analyze and critically assess. He/she will generally understand the national issue which is quite significant for history of the Czech lands in given period. He/she will extend his/her knowledge about political variety, industrial development, science, education and other subjects. In historiography stress is frequently placed on Czech national society in connection with mentioned subjects while German speaking population is slightly marginalized. Students will have better understanding of history of the region then settled mostly by German speaking population, will be able to work with sources on regional history. Students will be informed about Czech, German and Anglo-Saxon literature on the history of Czech Germans and Czech-German relationships.

1. None. 2.Good knowledge of Czech history in the period of 1848-1918, knowledge of German is an advantage however not a condition
