Course content
|
1.Introduction of sources for study of architecture In the lecture students will be presented with the course, its aims and they will be informed about conditions under which they will be given credits. In the main part of the lecture we will deal with division of archival sources usable for study of architecture. 2.History of architecture of the 20 century In the widest possible context the lecture will bring information on history of architecture from the Ancient period through medieval production to Baroque period and Classicism. Main esthetic tendencies of architectonic production in particular periods will be presented. 3.History of architecture in the 19 century The lecture will be given on the main points of development in the beginning of modern architecture in the 19 century. Furthermore will be mentioned main milestones and new technological procedures and materials in building production in the 19 century . 4.History of architecture in the 20 century The lecture will continue the previous lecture on architecture of the 19 century. Its main part will be focussed on development of architecture of the 20 century especially a change of esthetic architectonic expression during the 20 century. 5.Secondary literature usable for learning about history of architecture Students will be presented with available secondary literature on history of architecture, espec.modern one. Attention will be drawn to registers of monuments, specialized encyclopaedias and their interpretation. 6.Cadastral and map materials Overview of cadastral and map materials and ways of their interpretation. Explanatory notes of old military mapping plus historical introduction to mapping of the Czech Lands will be provided. 7.Specialized archives and archival documents usable for learning about history of architecture We will speak about particular workplaces, especially the Archive of National Technical Museum and the Archive of Land Surveying and Registry. Usable archival materials will be presented. 8.Building plans In the lecture students will learn about the oldest preserved architectonic plans. After historical introduction will follow explanation of reading of architectonic plan documentation and ways and difficulties of interpretation of particular drawings. 9.Photographic and other iconographic sources Presentation of ways and trickiness of iconographic material such as vedute, postcards, photographs. We will stress the necessity of critical approach to iconographic material.

Learning outcomes
|
The aim of the course is to present students with typology of written and iconographic sources which have been used for study of modern architecture. Most of mentioned sources will be usable especially for research of building production in the period from the 19 century to present days. Emphasis will be placed on ways of interepretation of available map documents, architectonic plan documentation, photodocumenation and other usable sources. The course will involve presentation of main stages of development of modern architecture in the Czech Lands in the context of the world production.
Students will have general knowledge of availability of particular achival documents usable for study of history of architecture and related scientific disciplines. They will be able to interpret iconographic, plan and text archives. They will have elementary knowledge of historiography and available literature and of location of important archival funds. Furthermore students will acquire knowledge of development of modern architecture in the context of Czech and world history.
