Learning outcomes
The aim of the course Archival Science I is to provide students with elementary principles of archival theory and methodology in perspective of European and historical context. Its goal is also to inform about history of development of archives since the period of Middle Ages and their current organization. Special attention is paid to specialized archival legislation in its historical development comparing to legislation in other European countries. Emphasis is placed on changed paradigms of the discipline with respect to massive use of e-documents and information technologies in general. They are bringing new possibilities in registering and copying of archival records but at the same time certain problems with providing safe and long-term deposition of digital documents.
Student will get a main idea about methodological and methodical problems of the discipline of archival science, its organization and legislation in comparison with other European countries. We put emphasis on changed paradigm of the dicipline in contemporary information society which means on work with a digital document, possibilities of its long-term safekeeping and preservation for archival purposes. Obviously we deal with the newest trends of the discipline in all over the world. The graduates might use their acquired knowledge for work in administrative institutions of various types and levels, in other memory institutions such as libraries, galleries, museums as well as some "think-tank" institutions preparing qualified documents for decisive authorities. The graduates will be able to respond flexibly to current social demands in the area of data selection and technical security of their long-term safekeeping as a part of our national cultural heritage. Stress on European context and knowledge of foreign languages should prepare students for professional mobility, especially within the European Union.
