Course content
1)The discipline is divided in three partial themes: a) Tradition of diplomatic studies, types of official documents, beginnings of diplomatic documents in Bohemia and development of central offices of the Czech State until the year 1526. b) Church and municipal diplomatics until the year 1526, public notaries, land Tables and Court Tables c) Czech royal office in the years 1526-1749, municipal, church diplomatics and diplomatics of manorial lords. Land registers, 2) Distance students will study following terminology and issues for each of the partial themes: a) - Terminology: "Bella diplomatica forensia"; "bella diplomatica litteraria"; École des chartes; Institut für österreichische Geschischtsforschung; Opening of Vatican city archives, State Archival School, State Historical Editorial Institute, Czech Historical Institute in Rome; "Codex diplomaticus et epistolaris Moraviae"; "Regesta diplomatica nec non epistolaria Bohemiae et Moraviae"; "Regesta Bohemiae et Moraviae aetatis Venceslai IV."; "Archiv český"; "Codex diplomaticus et epistolaris regni Bohemiae"; "Monumenta Vaticana res gestas bohemicas illustrantia"; "Acta Sacrae Congregationis de Propaganda fide res gestas bohamicas illustrantia"; "Epistulae et acta nuntiorum apostolicorum apud imperatorem"; "litterae cum filo serico"; "litterae cum canapis"; "litterae clausae"; "breve"; "motus proprii"; declarative ( notitiae) and constitutive ( chartae) deeds, division of deeds according to their contents, authority of their publisher, place of origin, level of preservation and authenticity, protocol, text, eschatocol and their parts, official books for internal needs, official books for public, types of official books, records, authenticity, chancellor, notary, prothonotary, secretary, Czech and German expedition and branch of the Royal Office a)- Issues: Development of Czech diplomatic studies until the beginning of the 20 century in European context, three basic forms of diplomatic documents, structure of a written text and external shape of a deed, issues of diplomatic documents in Bohemia until the second half of the 12 century, offices of Czech monarchs and Moravian margraves from the end of the 12 century till the year 1526, types and edition of their documents b)-Terminology: Nekrologium, official court files at Prague archbishopric, court files of general curates, confirmation books, erection books, books and copies of synodal statutes, books of ordained, visitation protocols, records of clergy collectors, inquisition protocols, administratorś files, town collection of deeds, town memorial books, books of town administration and their division, books of town judicature and their division, quatern, citation books, contract books, obligation books, memorial books, proclamation books, main book and book of instruments of the Land Tables, "front" and "back" books, notary instruments, books and deeds of imbreviaturas b)-Issues: Relation of church institutions to diplomatic documents since the end of the 10 century, specificity of diplomatic documents of ( arch)bishopric offices in the cities of Prague and Olomouc from the perspective of their contents and type, deeds in towns, origins, development and typology of municipal administrative books, municipal offices, formation, characteristics and types of LandTables and Court Tables, changes in keeping and destiny of Land Tables after the year of 1627, specificity of Land Tables in Moravia and Silesia, activities of public notaries in the Czech lands, basic diplomatic editions of church and municipal documents, diplomatic editions of land and Court Tables c)-Terminology: Act, file, file number, manipulations, dossier, file cabinet, office instructions, Central Austrian Court Office, vice-chancellor, Bohemian Court Office, branch, tax assessor, registrant, expediter, draftsmen, clean copyist, lower officers, open and closed missives, decrees. Registers and their types, types of protocols, books of titles, Moravian Court

Learning outcomes
Main goal of the discipline is to clarify methods and objectives of diplomatics as an auxiliary science of history, give a basic overview of formation and changes of medieval and modern official documents and their diplomatic editions.
Knowledge of diplomatic editions, their editors and circumstances of their origin. General knowledge of diplomatic literature. General knowledge of typology of diplomatic documents until the middle of the 19 century and their development. Ability to recognize, assess, describe and edit diplomatic documents.

Assessment methods and criteria

An essay, ranging from 10 to 15 pages, a paper on diplomatics from selected theme. Written test to check knowledge of editions of diplomatic documents.
