Learning outcomes
|
The subject focuses on the development of construction from prehistoric times till Late Antiquity period, overreaching into early stages of Byzantine and Islamic world in the European cultural region. The lectures deal with basic information about the development of building in the given time periods in the regions of Turkey, Iraq, Arabian peninsula, Northern Africa (Egypt) and Europe. Prehistoric times and Ancient times (dividing of Prehistoric and Ancient periods - space-time relations, constructions in Paleolithic and Mesolithic, construction activities in Neolithic and early periods of Prehistoric in Egypt, development in early periods of Mesopotamia and Egypt), Ancient Periods (pre-Greek Ancient Periods: Cycladic culture, Minoan culture, Troyan culture radius, Helladic culture, Greek Ancient Period: building materials and structures, the building code, construction types, settlements; Roman Ancient Period: building materials and constructions, building codes, construction types, settlements). Byzantine and Islamic architecture (Byzantine architecture and its expansion in Europe; Islamic architecture and its development). The students shall understand the whole subject in basic lines. Classical antiquity is stressed most, as it is the background for understanding the medieval development of buildings in western and central Europe. The lectures focus on the development of construction activities from the early Christian architecture to Gothic buildings in the area of western and central Europe, mainly Great Britain, Spain, France, Germany and Italy. In specific lectures we pay attention to buildings in Czech Republic. Early Christian sacred architecture in the Mediterranean (church, grave), pre-Romanesque (Merovingian, Carolingian, Ottonian renaissance), Romanesque, Gothic. The students learn the basic construction development of the settlements and building types. Building types are evaluated according to construction technologies, development of the layout and art and style manifestations.
The students will learn the development of the constructions from the Prehistoric till Late Gothic period in the cultural region of Europe, starting with the pre-Romanesque styles in central and western Europe. They will also learn to compare the styles and construction technologies of single types of buildings. The tuition shows the trends of building development, their functions and meaning. Questions of comparing and development tendencies help to finds answers to these.
