Learning outcomes
The aim is to understand the nature of history, its meaning and role within the system of sciences. To orientate oneself in the internal division of historical sciences and to learn the basics of historical method. To learn how to work with sources and literature, including bibliographies, editions of sources and specialist journals. Gain an overview of the types of sources and learn the skills of external and internal criticism.
Upon completion of the course, the learner will be able to: -explain the basic concepts and issues of historical knowledge, including discussions of the meaning and goals of history -orient themselves in the system of historical sciences, their position among other scientific disciplines and the internal division of the field -describe and apply the basic principles of historical method, including source criticism (external and internal) -distinguish between different types of historical sources and literature -search, analyse and effectively use specialist literature (including journal studies), including domestic and foreign databases -work with basic bibliographic record-keeping tools and bibliographic managers -compose an annotation, abstract and resume, and review and assign a scholarly work

Credit will be awarded based on: A) Attendance at lectures and seminars (a maximum of 2 absences is permitted) B) Active participation in discussions and the preparation and presentation of a paper during the seminar C) Completion of 2 assignments via Moodle: 1) The student will discuss the title of the topic and the main research question with the instructor during the seminar. The topic must be narrowed down/specified as much as possible (thematically, temporally, spatially). After the topic and question are approved, the student will prepare and upload the "Seminar Paper Assignment" to Moodle. The MS Word file will include the following items: the student's name, the title of the seminar paper, an abstract (approx. 10 lines: temporal and spatial scope; main and sub-research questions/objectives; proposed methods). 2) After the previous assignment is approved, the student will conduct a literature review of sources and scholarly literature on the chosen topic. They will submit it to Moodle as a file (MS Word/OpenOffice) titled "Research" in accordance with the bibliographic conventions of the journal České časopisy historické. The file must include the following items: the student's name; the title of the seminar paper; at least 2 unpublished or published sources; at least 5 scholarly books or theses, 1 popular science book, 2 studies from conference proceedings, 1 journal article from WoS or Scopus, 1 journal article from JSTOR, and 5 databases used (excluding the required WoS, Scopus, and JSTOR).
