Course content
1. Definition of the term of historicism. Historicism in the period before the 19th century. 2. Roots of (neo)classicism and its manifestations in Europe 3. (Neo)classicism in the Czech Lands 4. Parallel historicism - neoclassicism - neo-Gothic - neo-Romanesque style 5. Regional versions of historicism in the first half of the 19th century 6. What style to build in? - Period debate over universal style. 7.Neo-Renaissance - roots in Europe - a theoretical concept 8.Division of the Italian-Renaissance in our territory 9. Czech Renaissance (Antonín Wiehl) 10. Theoretical concept of neoRenaissance in the Czech Lands 11. Late historicisms in Europe and in the Czech Lands 12. Ecclectic standpoints, art nouveau, real historicism 13. What style to built in on the turn of the 19 and 20 centuries? Period debate on building production of the time.

Learning outcomes
The course deals with the historicizing building production in the 19th century. The main focus is placed on architecture in the Czech lands. Students will become familiar with the concept of historicism and its implementation in works of architecture. Emphasis will be placed on a period architectural discussion on the topic: What style to build in? During the course students will be presented with some of the attitudes of prominent Czech and European architects on the basis of their own publications.
Student of the course will be familiar with the building production in our country and generally in Europe in the 19th century. He/she will have elementary knowledge of historical neo-styles. He/she will be able to classify a historical building in the city to a certain period. This knowledge can be very useful for graduates who intend to work in heritage care or documentation of monuments.
Prerequisites
Students should have very good knowledge of general and Czech history of the 19th century. They should also have completed courses of history of architecture from Antiquity to the Baroque period .

Assessment methods and criteria

The course is designed primarily for students of Cultural History, Cultural and Historical Regional Studies and students of the discipline of Documentation of monuments. Students should have knowledge of history from the period of Middle Ages to the twentieth century. At the same time they should have elementary knowledge of architectural styles from Ancient Times to the Baroque period.
