Course content
There are 6 to 7 selected themes. Each theme will be presented theoretically one week by lecturers and next week a discussion with an invited guest will take place. The order of the themes is given just in outline, there could also occur minimal partial changes in the themes. Possible 7th theme is still being debated. 1. Divadlo za branou/Theatre beyond the gate 2. Foreign careers of Czechoslovak artists 3. Czechoslovak television from the half of the 60ś till the beginning of normalization 4. Czechoslovak new film wave - the theme presented deliberately only on one selected concrete creative life story. 5. Music miracle or the golden 60ś and Czechoslovak pop music 6. Ban or leaving to exile? Confusion of Czech culture and Czech artists in the period of normalization

Learning outcomes
In this course students will have a chance to have a closer look at selected cultural themes from the area of Czechoslovak theatre, film, music, TV and literature. They will acquire theoretical competences which they might use in their further study of modern Czechoslovak history. The main thing is they will have a unique opportunity to meet and discuss with people who created Czechoslovak cultural events. The selected themes are those which are not currently given priority or are presented superficially or have been almost forgotten.
Students have general knowledge of Czechoslovak history after the year 1945 and period context of explained themes. They have a general knowledge of cultural development in Czechoslovakia. They are able to identify main problems and turning points in its development and orientation. They can demonstrate ability of critical interpretation of period materials.
Prerequisites
Elementary knowledge of modern Czech history and especially elementary cultural knowledge of afterwar Czechoslovak theatre, film, music and TV, ability to listen and discuss the subject.

Assessment methods and criteria

Students are required to attend seminars, however 2 absences are tolerated. They are required to be active and participate in discussion in seminars and discussions with guests while level of asked questions will be evaluated. In the end of the course students can choose from 2 alternative options: 1) they produce a detailed review of a chosen discussion from the whole cycle or 2) they have to do a test which will contain themes which were clarified in seminars and in discussions with guests.
