Europe in the beginning of the 17 century Habsburg imperial policy Holy Roman Empire and protestant oposition Economic stagnation Demographic and social conditions Mannerism and Baroque Uprisings and social protests Thirty Years´ War Dutch way to independence Period of English Revolution, Civil Wars and the Commonwealth France under the reign of Louis XIV ( Louis the Great ) Fight for Spanish heritage Polish- Lithuanian Union in battle with Chmelnický. Flood and the Great Northern War.

Learning outcomes
The lectures will cover a wide range of issues of the 17 century, which is by some historians viewed as an epoch of a general crisis. It will be built on previous research and interpretations of both Czech ( J. Polišenský, J. Petráň, M. Hroch and others) and foreign historians, espec.the English historian Ch. Hill and the Danish researcher N.Steensgaard. We will look in detail at Polish historic science and its results. We will study political and internal aspects, moreover we will look at economic, business, scientific, cultural, demographic and also climatic issues.
Student will get information not only about political history in the period of Early Modern Times, but also about causes of events. We will clarify demographic, social and economic changes that very often caused several rebellions and wars. We will analyse Polišenskýś models of two European civilization circles and Braudelś concept of global history.

Student must know available Czech literature.Use of a comparative method is a must too. He/ she will work with editions of resources or examples of archives. Emphasis will be placed on work with a map and various tables.
