Course content
1. Confession situation in Europe at the end of the 18 and beginning of the 19 century. 2. Enlightenment -eclessiastical reforms of Joseph II, Toleration Patent 3. Catholic "revival"- origins and growth of Ultramontanism 4. Bernard Bolzano and his circle 5. Continuing recofessionalization, folk piety, flourishing cults of the Virgin Mary 6. Nationalization of religious life 7. The First Vatican Council and how it affected religious life ( formation of the Old Catholic Church) 8. Definition and examples of Czech political catholicism 9. Definition and examples of German political catholicism in the Habsburg monarchy 10. Beginnings of modern social policy of churches ( e.g. influence of Adolph Kolpingś movement) 11. Encyclical Rerum novarum and formation of christian - social parties 12. Secularization of society in the 19 century 13. Catholic modernity and its forms in religious thinking in the Habsburg monarchy

Learning outcomes
Overview of eclessiastical history of the Habsburg monarchy from the Toleration Patent till the beginning of the First World War in the context of European eclessiastical history. Attention will be aimed at the whole range of both recognised churches and unofficialy operating confession streams specially focussing on the Czech lands. We will also look at the issues of folk piety, christian-social movement etc.
Students should acquire ability to understand basic confession issues which significantly influenced life of the society in the Habsburg monarchy in the "long" 19 century. Ability to contextualize the issue in the eclessiastical life of Europe and at the same time to interpret.
Prerequisites
Credits from basic courses on modern history of the 18 and 19 century.

Student should have passed lectures on modern history of the 19 century and should have had basic knowledge of terminology of religious studies. From that resulting ability to include presented processes in the context of eclessiastical history of the end of the 18 and beginning of the 20 century.
