Learning outcomes
The course focuses on the analysis of texts from the Enlightenment to the Vormärz epoch (1720-1848) both in their cultural and historical context and in terms of formal features. The aim is to introduce students to a literary text as a specific author's statement and to show a way to its understanding. On the examples of key texts from the given epoch, individual genres, genre criteria, or their development (drama, novel), and rhetorical figures will be discussed. While analyzing lyrical texts, emphasis will also be given on the recognition of the metre, the rhyme, the function of the lyrical subject, and the relationship of these features to the meaning of the text.
Students will gain an overview of the cultural and historical context from the Enlightenment to the Vormärz epoch (1720-1848). They will also get acquainted with key literary texts of the time and learn how to interpret them.
