Course content
1. Linguistics, German philology and linguistics as scientific fields. Practical problems solved by linguistics. 2. Definitions of language. 3. Language in the sense of langage, langue and parole. 4. Speech act. Paraverbal and non-verbal elements of communication. 5. Language as a system of symbols. 6. Main sub-disciplines of linguistics. 7. Relation of language and writing. Orthography and orthographic norm. 8. Language development in humans. Relation of language and thinking. Psycholinguistics and didactics of foreign language teaching. 9. Brief overview of languages in the world, their classification. 10. Typological classification of languages. 11. Germanic languages, German as an Indo-European and a Germanic language. 12. German and its varieties. Sociolinguistics. 13. The study of language use - language and its users, pragmalinguistics.

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to provide basic knowledge about the German language and its characteristics viewed from the sub-disciplines of linguistics. Furthermore, students become familiar with typical characteristics of languages in general and with the basic linguistics terminology in German as well as in Czech.
Students are able to use the terminology related to linguistics and describe basic characteristics of the German language, its varieties and development. They are able to describe linguistics and its sub-disciplines. They are acquainted with the basic literature on linguistics.

Assessment methods and criteria

To obtain credit, students must participate in the seminars actively, complete all assigned tasks and pass the final test (70% of the total points must be achieved). The oral examination (approx. 20 minutes) can be taken only by those students who obtain credit. In the examination, students draw a topic from a given set of topics and they are also being asked additional questions.
