Course content
1. Translation theory as applied linguistics 2. A survey of language systems I 3. A survey of language systems II 4. Equivalence I: denotative 5. Equivalence II: connotative 6. Equivalence III: textual-normative and pragmatic 7. Equivalence IV: formal-aesthetic 8. Contrasting semantic differences in morpho-syntactics during translation 9. Textual linguistics and the possibilities of a textual typology. 10. Functional styles; textual types. 11. The translator as a factor in the translation.

Learning outcomes
This seminar will examine the basic theory of translation, and teach how to distinguish the main functional styles. Genuine translations will serve as a starting point for applying the theory. To start with we will work on non-literary texts of various functions and textual styles.
The student " Is familiar with the fundamental problems of translation theory " Knows the basic terminology of translation theory " Can apply the theory while translating various types of text (the formal letter, criticism, review, interview, tourist guide etc.) and various functional styles (informational, administrative, publicity, expertise).
