Course content
1. The interest in folklore in the Enlightenment: Johann Gottfried Herder and his image of Slavs in Stimmen der Völker in Liedern 2. The image of Bohemia in German classical period: Goethe's stays in Bohemian spas (Karlovy Vary, Mariánské Lázně, Teplice) and his image of Bohemian landscape, soul and female ideal (Ulrike von Levetzow). Analysis and interpretation of the poem Marienbader Elegie. 3. Friedrich Schiller's view of Bohemia, analysis of the drama Die Räuber 4. The Role of Bohemian mythology and the idealized picture of Prague in the period of German Romanticism: Clemens Brentano (Die Gründung Prags). Eduard Mörike and his image of Mozart's Prague in the novella Mozart auf der Reise nach Prag. Analysis and interpretation. 5. Bohemian themes in Austrian dramatic works in the Biedermeier and the Vormärz period: Franz Grillparzer and his dramatic work about Czech themes (Libussa, König Ottokars Glück und Ende). 6. Dramatic Work of Johannes Nepomuk Nestroy 7. Bohemia in the mirror of realistic and naturalist travel literature: Theodor Fontane (Reisebriefe aus Karlsbad, Schloss Eger), Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach (In Eger); Johann Gottfried Seume (Auf den Straßen Böhmens); 8. Czechs and Bohemia in the Silesian circle around Gerhart Hauptmann (Hermann Stehr, Johannes M. Avenarius) 9. Czech themes in the works of the 1st half of the 20th century: The picture of Czech national Enlightenment and the figure of Karel Sabina in the novel Die verkaufte Braut by Max Brod; 10. Robert Musil - the Austrian author with a strong relationship to Moravia, especially to Brno. Analysis of his work Verwirrungen des Zöglings Törless. 11. Lidice - the place commemorating the Czech tragedy - Poetry: Franz Fühmann, František Halas, Jiří Václav Svoboda, Karel Šiktanc, Jaroslav Seifert, Viktor Fischl 12. Lidice - the place commemorating Czech tragedies - Czech and German fiction: Distortion of historical facts in Heinrich Mann´s novel Lidice, Ludwig Bäte: short story Rosen nach Lidice, František Křelina: Každý své břímě.

Learning outcomes
This Course concentrates on influencing of Czech and German cultures, especially on the image of Czechs, Czech history and Czech milieu in the works of German and Austrian authors of the 18th-20th centuries. The composition of this course is diachronic, in particular from the Enlightenment via significant cultural, historical and literary stages of the second half of the 18th century up to the 20th century. From individual stages of literary and historical development representative figures are selected in the manner that will show the reflection of Czech literary themes and literary motifs in its richness. Students will pay attention to the selected aspects of Bohemian mythology, great persons of Czech history and art, to Czech and Moravian topography and to those places of memory as seen with the eyes of German-writing and Czech authors.
Students -are able to analyze and to interpret literary texts with respect to Czech themes and motifs; -deepen their knowledge of literature written in the German language in the Czech-German intercultural and inter-disciplinary context; -develop their interpretative and argumentative abilities based on the study of primary and secondary literature.
