1. The Enlightenment I: philosophical and social concepts, literary theory and drama (Gottsched) 2. The Enlightenment II: Lessing 3. The Enlightenment III: fables (Gellert and Lessing); poetry (Klopstock) 4. Sturm und Drang I: theoretical concepts; the epic (novel) 5. Sturm und Drang II: drama (the bourgeouis tragedy) 6. Weimar Classicism I: basic literary and philosophical terms; poetry 7. Weimar Classicism II: the narrative prose (Wieland and Goethe); Bildungsroman 8. Weimar Classicism III: Schiller and Goethe 9. Between Weimar Classicism and Romanticism: poetry (Hölderlin); epic and drama (Kleist) 10. Romanticism I: Jena; the theory of early Romanticism 11. Romanticism II: Heidelberg; folkart and invented poems and tales 12. Romanticism III: E.T.A. Hoffmann 13. Literary Biedermeier as an interim between Weimar Classicism, Romanticism, and Realism 14. Learning outcomes
This course will introduce the development of the literature in German-speaking areas from 1720 to 1848, and its main authors and works. We will concentrate on individual periods and the development of individual literary genres (novella, drama, novel, fable etc.). The seminars will introduce the key works from the Enlightenment, the Sturm und Drang period, the Weimar Classicism, German Romanticism, the Biedermeier, and the pre-revolutionary period up to 1848 (Goethe, Schiller, Hölderlin, Heinrich von Kleist, Jean Paul, E.T.A. Hoffmann, Heine, Büchner etc.).
