1. The subject of intercultural German studies, its definition and development 2. Culture and cultural typology 3. (Ethnic) stereotypes 4. Cultural xenology 5. Cultural comparative studies. 6-10. Selected concepts of intercultural German studies, and examples from Czech-German (Austrian, Swiss) discourse: e.g. empathy, tolerance, courtesy, criticism, taboo. 11. Intercultural communication 12. Learning outcomes
This course will develop the communication skills for contact with partners from the German-speaking countries. This is an essential language qualification requiring familiarity with cultural historical, socio-linguistic and political aspects of the relations, past and present, between the Czechs and the Germans, Austrians, and Swiss. The course examines the significant role of German-language culture for Czech society, and will motivate students to improve their German. Last but not least, students will acquire an intercultural overview not only of communication, but also of linguistics and literature.
The student " Knows how to define the concept of intercultural German Studies, and knows its history " Can clarify the term 'culture' and outline a cultural typology " Can present selected artworks (literary or film) with reference to xenological and intercultural aspects " Is familiar with the basic cultural-historical and political milestones of the German-speaking cultures.
