1. Europe - cultural and geographical definition of the term, mythological background of the term "Europe", European iconography, allegory of countries and regions (Europe, Germania, Czechia, etc.) 2. "Culture", theoretical grounds for culturology (Cassirer, Burckhardt, Huizinga) 3. Ancient tradition - philosophy, politics, democracy 4. Ancient tradition - ancient mythology 5. Ancient tradition - ancient art (architecture, sculpture, Homér, rhetoric, poetry) 6. Ancient tradition - Greek and Roman literature and its reflection in art (Homér, Vergil, rhetoric, poetry, drama) 7. Ancient tradition - ancient tradition in art and literature 8. The Bible and its traditions - Bible - basic characteristics 9. The Bible and its traditions - Bible and its translations into national languages 10. The Bible and its traditions - Bible and its traditions in art and literature, Bible and iconography 11. Influence of Judaism on the evolution of European cultural history 12. Learning outcomes
|
This course will provide students with a comprehensive overview of the roots of the European culture and the keywords. Students will get familiar with various aspects of European cultural history and their influence on German speaking cultural space. Europe will be seen as a specific "space of cultural communication". Various cultural influences and traditions are combined in this space.
Student knows the keywords and gets basic overview of changes of European cultural history and art. He/she is familiar with geography and cultural and historical changes in Europe, is able to use secondary literature in German and can interpret images and texts.

Assessment methods and criteria
|

Active participation in seminars and completed tasks. To obtain the credit students have to write a seminar paper on a chosen topic, 5 pages in length.
