Course content
1. Czech pre-Romanesque and Romanesque architecture and its relationship to German architecture 2. Early, high and late Gothic periods in architecture 3. Gothic painting and sculpture in the Prague courts of Charles IV and Wenceslaus IV 4. Renaissance painting and architecture in the Czech-German context 5. Baroque architecture of the Catholic and Protestant countries 6. Baroque sculpture and painting 7. German Romanesque painting 8. Symbolism and Art Nouveau 9. Expressionism in painting and film 10. Historicism and the modern in architecture 11. Contemporary fine arts 12. Topical questions of Czech-German co-operation in culture and the arts 13. Excursion to Litoměřice (North Bohemian Fine Arts Museum, Gallery and Museum of the Litoměřice Diocese) or to Dresden (Albertinum)

Learning outcomes
The course will use examples of the fine arts to present the fruits of Czech-German symbiosis before the rise of nationalistic consciousness, and will explore the influence of Czech and German nationalism on the art of the 19th and 20th centuries. There will be a special emphasis on the culture and politics of remembrance.
The student - Can orient him/herself in the stages and directions of the fine arts in a given cultural and historical context - Can critically evaluate and interpret works of art - Can work critically with the academic literature (in Czech and German), while learning the theoretical terminology from the arts, culture and history
