Course content
1. Bohemia by the sea as a literary topos in Shakespeare's drama "The Winter's Tale" 2. Franz Frühmann in the context of GDR literature 3. Franz Frühmann and his retelling of Shakespeare's "The Winter's Tale" for children 4. Franz Frühmann and his short story, "Böhmen am Meer" (1962), thematisation of resettlement, displacement, removal 5. Ingeborg Bachmann: the historical context, the origin of the poem "Böhmen liegt am Meer", its variants 6. "Böhmen liegt am Meer" by I. Bachmann and the key interpretations of this poem in the second half of the 20th century 7. Interpretation of I. Bachmann's poem "Böhmen liegt am Meer" in Libuše Moníková's essay - contextualization of the poem and analysis of the shift of motifs from the perspective of the migrant author 8. Learning outcomes
Already Schakespeare placed Bohemia on the shores of the sea in his drama "Winter Tales". The aim of the course will be to trace the development and significance of this literary topos in German-language literature after 1945 in the context of modern political changes and to discuss its transformations using specific literary works as examples.
The student is familiar with the basic texts reflecting the literary tops of Bohemia by the Sea and is able to interpret specific literary texts and this motif both in the cultural and historical context of a given work and in terms of the development of this motif in literature after 1945.
