Course content
1. Introduction to the theory of professional translation with an emphasis on intercultural aspects. Supporting means for translators (online dictionaries, databases, glossaries, etc.). 2. Analyses of source and translated texts with special regard to translation strategies and methods. Theme, content, intentions, functions, text construction, assumptions, nonverbal means, lexical means, sentence structure. 3. Translation Strategy I: issues associated with realias, proper names, word-formation, terminology, functional equivalence. 4. Translation Strategy II: The Problem of Translation of Verbal Aspects and Tenses. 5. Translation Strategy III: Contrastive Syntax, Division of the Sentence into the Theme and the Rheme; Coherence, Cohesion, the Nominal Style. 6. Texts from the Economic Area: Business Correspondence, Commissions, Purchase Orders, 7. Legal texts: documents, reports/certificates, contracts. 8. Technical texts: medical technology, automotive, website translation. 9. Problems of translation of film titles. 10. Problems of translation of marketing texts.

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to acquaint students with the basic procedures and principles of translation of specialized texts, and on the basis of this knowledge gradually develop students' translational, analytical and communication skills. While working with authentic texts in the economic, legal and technical field, specific translation strategies and methods will be practiced, and learners will also learn about culturally-based text-structuring conventions.
Participants are focused on translation strategies, they work with glossaries and other translation aids. They are oriented in the types of texts and functional styles. They can apply relevant methods and strategies when translating expert texts from and to the German language.
