Learning outcomes
|
The course covers the development of German-language literature from 1848 to 1945 in Austria (i.e. the Austrian, later Austro-Hungarian monarchy, and the Austrian Republic) and in Germany (i.e. the German Reich, the Weimar Republic, and the so-called Third Reich). We will cover German bourgeois realism, naturalism, and its counterpoints such as the Viennese modernism, impressionism, neo-Romanticism, symbolism, expressionism, dadaism; further the trends in the Weimar Republic - such as Brecht's epic theatre -, and in Austria. Special attention will also be paid to the exile literature.
