The interwar years - the Weimar Republic 7. Germans in Czechoslovakia 8. Anti-semitism in German-speaking societies 9. Nazi Germany 10. The Second World War and its consequences 11. Learning outcomes
Through seminars, lectures and independent study, students will acquire a chronological overview of key events in the political history and cultural development of German-speaking society from the rise of the nation communities in the Habsburg Empire, and the creation of the German Reich in 1871 to the present. There will be a special focus on Czech-German relations. Another goal is to introduce the significant figures from German cultural history and their role in the collective national consciousness of today's Germans and Austrians.

To obtain credit " Regular preparatory homework " Regular and active part in the seminars " multiple-choice " Review of a relevant book or anthology The review comprises a critical reflection, written in German, and will serve as the basis of an oral exam. It must summarise the content of the book, describe its goals, and critically engage with the author's claims and arguments. The exam: The student will speak of the issues in one of the reviewed books, will describe the time period, and place it in the relevant context of German, Austrian or Swiss history. Furthermore, he/she will be asked to explain the significance of certain concepts or figures and thereby demonstrate his/her understanding of the history and culture of the German-speaking societies.
