Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to get acquainted with the basic concepts and problems of theoretical analysis and critical approach to the media. In the course we will focus on three basic areas: 1) basic concepts of media theory; 2) media history; 3) functions and contexts. We will get acquainted with the traditional analysis of the media, which is focused on content and based on the communication model (transmitter-message-audience), and with the basics of advanced thinking about the media, which is based on the concept of the medium as a message (medium is message). We will analyze the relationship between media and the formation of human culture in general and consider the role of different types of media in different periods of human history. We will focus on the problem of social, political, economic and cultural functions of the media.
Students will understand basic concepts, history and functions of media. They will be able to interpret and write scholarly text in the field. They will understand relation between media and culture.
