Course content
1. - 2. What is a university. What is the difference between a university and a college, what are the bodies of a university, what are academic freedoms. How the academic year goes, how to get to important documents and orders. How to find your way in academic ranks. What is the role of the student at the university and how can he participate in faculty and university activities and what can he gain from his active participation. 3. History of the university, changes in its ideas. University as an example of ecclesiomorphic structure. 4. Basic recommendations for creating a paper and accompanying presentation tools. 5. Basic recommendations for recognition and acquisition of professional literature. Types of resources and work with them. Basic professional periodicals. 6. Heuristics. How to proceed with the preparatory work before the actual writing of the seminar paper. 7. Plagiarism. Requirements for correct citation and citation styles. 8. Formal requirements for writing a professional text, compilation of bibliographic data, compilation of a list of literature. 9. Further theoretical advice for writing seminar papers. Practical compilation of research topic, goals, questions and structure of work. 10. - 11. What is science and what is philosophy. Selected basic concepts in philosophy and social sciences. 12. Method, methodology, research goals. Classification of sciences and types of scientific methods. 13. Discussion and certification

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to introduce the student to the academic world. The student will get acquainted with the institutional structure of the university and faculty with the individual bodies and functions of all its components. Furthermore, with the possibility of involvement in academic and leisure activities at Faculty of Arts UJEP and with the schedule of the academic year. The main goal of the course is to provide theoretical advice and recommendations for the independent creation of outputs (papers and seminar papers). From the formulation of the research plan, hypotheses through heuristics, research, curriculum development to the formal requirements for the form of the resulting text. Last but not least, attention is paid to the issues of the definition of science and its methods or the distinction between scientific and philosophical approaches.
The student will get: - Ability to orientate at the university and its bodies. - Basic knowledge of the principles of scientific work and scientific research. - Basic skills of research preparation and implementation. - Knowledge and skills, usable both during the study and in practice after its completion (principles of public speaking, processing and reproduction of information, basics of critical thinking, etc.).
