Course content
1.The meaning of the word "metaphysics"; the changing notion of metaphysics in history. 2. The problem of the possibility of metaphysics; Kant's critique of metaphysics. 3. Problems of traditional metaphysics: Platonism vs. Aristotelianism; being and existence; the concept of being; the principles of being; the properties of being; the problem of universals. 4. Analytical metaphysics: inspiration and origins; existence; individuals and properties; modalities, dispositions and possible worlds; the problem of essentialism; causality, determinism vs. libertarianism; distinction of the physical and the mental, monism and dualism.

Learning outcomes
Student acquaints with the notion and the history of metaphysics. The course includes also an introduction to contemporary analytical metaphysics.
Student acquires the ability to discriminate the distinctively metaphysical approach to reality. He/she acquaints with the basic outlines of the history of metaphysics, with main topics of analytical metaphysics and with contemporary methodology of metaphysics.

Special preconditions are not required.

Assessment methods and criteria

During semester the student constantly follows the lectures and is interested in the discussed topics. He/she collaborates actively in seminar. The final written test consists in two randomly selected questions.
