Historical development of globalization: archaic period, proto-globalization and modern globalization, key milestones and events affecting globalization 3. Economic globalization: globalization of markets and production, the role of multinational corporations and international financial institutions, standardization and its impact on trade 4. Political globalisation and global governance: the rise of international and non-governmental organisations, the declining importance of nation-states and the rise of global governance 5. Cultural globalization: the spread of cultural elements and the emergence of global culture, the role of media and the internet in cultural globalization, cultural homogenization vs. diversity 6. Ecological globalisation and sustainability: global environmental problems (climate change, biodiversity loss), international environmental agreements and cooperation, the concept of ecological globalisation 7. Globalisation and technology: the impact of technological progress on globalisation, the digital divide and access to technology, the role of social media in global communication 8. Globalisation of labour and migration: international labour movement and its impact, migration 9. Globalisation and inequality: economic and social inequalities in a globalised world 10. Learning outcomes
|
The Topical Issues of Globalization course aims to provide students with a deeper understanding of the processes of globalization and their impact on the economy, politics, culture and the environment. Students will learn about the main theories of globalization, historical developments and current trends, including the challenges and opportunities that globalization presents. The course promotes the cultivation of analytical thinking, critical access to information and the ability to discuss key issues of globalization in academic and professional settings.
Upon completion of the course, students should: - Understand the key concepts and dimensions of globalization, including economic, political, cultural and environmental globalization. - Analyze the impacts of globalization on businesses, labour markets, international trade, and finance. - Critically evaluate the roles of transnational institutions, multinational corporations and governments in the process of globalization. - Assess current global challenges such as inequality, climate change, migration and digital transformation. - Gain the ability to work with specialist English texts and apply the knowledge gained in practice.

Attendance in lectures is mandatory ( online conference in distance education). The final evaluation considers the following criteria: - Presentation of a selected topic ( 50 %) - Homework - mostly reading with an understanding of given articles (30 %) - The active approach, involvement in a discussion ( 20 % ) Credits for a min. 50 %. Overall rating: 90-100 % A 80 - 89 % B 70 - 79 % C 60 - 69 % D 50 - 59 % E < 50 % failed
