Course content
1. Classification of analytical methods. Limit of detection, limit of determination, sensitivity, precision and accuracy, measurement uncertainty. 2. Sampling of liquid, solid and gaseous samples manually and with the aid of sampling devices. Sample treatment - grinding, milling, sieving, quartation, dissolution/digestion of samples. 3. Qualitative analysis of inorganic substances - group reactions of cations, selected reaction of anions. 4. Qualitative analysis of organic substances - survey of nomenclature in organic chemistry, general procedures for the analyses of unknown samples, determination of elements and groups in organic compounds. 5. Gravimetric analysis, solubility product, examples of gravimetric determinations. 6. Protolytic equilibria, kinds of solvents, dissociation constants. 7. Volumetric analysis, acidobasic, precipitation, manganometric, iodometric, chelatometric, dichromatometric titrations, kinds of end-point indications, indicators. 8. Electroanalytical methods - potentiometry, conductimetry, electrogravimetry, coulometry, polarography. 9. Spectrophotometry - theory, principles, equipments, applications. 10. AAS - theory, principles, equipments, applications, AES (ICP) - theory, principles, equipments, applications. 11. Chromatographic methods (GC, LC) - principles, arrangements, applications. 12. Determination of selected parameters in waters - BOD, COD, pH, conductivity, oil substances, metals, etc. 13. Determination of selected pollutants in air -compounds of sulfur, nitrogen, carbon etc. 14. Construction of calibrating curve, measurements using standard additions, evaluation of analytical measurements, examples of applications in analytical laboratory. Laboratory exercises: Acidimetric determination of acetic acid in vinegar Manganometric determination of hydrogen peroxide Chelatometric determination of copper Potentiometric determination of phosphoric acid content in an unknown sample. Conductimetric determination of phosphoric acid content in an unknown sample. Spectrophotometric determination of iron Refractometric determination of KCl content in an aqueous solution
