Course content
Lecture Topics: 1. Introduction to special education (subject, goals, methods, terminology, specific issues of special education, the system of education, advisory service). 2. Speech therapy (introduction to the subject, classification and etiology of speech disorders, therapy possibilities, up-bringing issues and the education of individuals with impaired communication ability). 3. Surdopedy (the introduction to the subject, classification and etiology of hearing disorders, up-bringing issues and education of individuals with hearing disorders). 4. Visual impairment (the introduction to the subject, classification and etiology of visual disorders, up-bringing issues and education of individuals with visual disorders). 5. Psychopedy (the introduction to the subject, classification and etiology of mental disorders, up-bringing issues and education of individuals with mental disorders). 6. Somatopedy (the introduction to the subject, classification and etiology of physical disorders and health weakening, up-bringing issues and education of individuals with physical disorders). 7. Etopedy (the introduction to the subject, classification and etiology of behavioural disorders, up-bringing issues and education of individuals with behavioural disorders). 8. Partial deficits (introduction to the subject, classification and etiology of learning disorders and ADHD, ADD, up-bringing issues and education of individuals with nonpartial deficits). 9. Combined disorders (the introduction to the subject, classification and etiology of combined disorders, up-bringing issues and education of individuals with combined disorders). 10. Organizations and associations dealing with individuals with disability. Seminar Topics: 1. Diagnostics in special education (demonstration of tests). 2. Practical introduction of certain types of speech disorders: records, videos. 3. Alternative and augmentative communication: introduction of certain types of accredited courses, demonstrations, application possibilities. 4. Visual impairment: compensation aids (a visist to Tyfloservis). 5. Psychopedy: - social learning (demonstration of work with manuals for certain activities). 6. Somatopedy: hobby activities of people with physical disability. 7. Etopedy: addictions. 8. Partial deficit: grafomotor skills. 9. Combined disorders: deaf blindness. 10. Social and sport games for individuals with disability.

Learning outcomes
The subject makes students familiar with some basic facts form the area of special education. It enables students to fulfill one of the basic preconditions for their future profession: the care of people with health or mental disability. The subject stimulates communication development and cognitive processes.
Subject Knowledge: Within the framework of theoretical knowledge students can characterize certain issues of special education, they can use professional terminology related to a given issue and they are able to describe basic behavioural and educational procedures for all the types of disabilities. Students are aware of the importance of emphatic approach towards the clients and their family members. Professional Skills: Students can suggest changes to the environment, teaching aids, toys and rules for the games for children with certain types of impairment. Students can put theoretical knowledge into practice.
