Course content

Lecture Topics: 1. consultation: Introduction to special education: subject, goals, methods, terminology. Selected topics of special education: basic characteristics of individual areas, introduction to the issues of upbringing and education of individuals with different types of disability. Seminar Topics: 2. consultation: - Diagnostics in special education (demonstration of tests). - Practical introduction of individual types of speech disorders: records, videos. - Alternative and augmentative communication: introduction of individual types of accredited courses, demonstrations, application possibilities. - Visual impairment: compensational aids (excursion to Tyfloservis). - Psychopedy: social learning (demonstration of work with manuals for individual activities). Self-Study: Speech therapy: deepening the knowledge field about the subject by studying recommended literature. Surdopedy: deepening the knowledge field about the subject by studying recommended literature. Visual impairment: deepening the knowledge field about the subject by studying recommended literature. Psychopedy: deepening the knowledge field about the subject by studying recommended literature. Somatopedy: deepening the knowledge field about the subject by studying recommended literature. Etopedy: familiarization with the issues of the subject by studying recommended literature. Partial deficits: familiarization with the issues of the subject by studying recommended literature. Combined disorders: familiarization with the issues of the subject by studying recommended literature.

Learning outcomes
|
The subject makes students familiar with basic knowledge of issues covered by special education. It enables students to fulfill one of the basic preconditions for their future profession: care of people with health or mental disability. The subject promotes communication development and cognitive processes.
Subject Knowledge: Within the theoretical knowledge framework students can characterize individual areas of special education, can use special terminology related to given issues and are able to describe basic behavioural and educational procedures for all types of disabilities. Students are aware of the importance of emphatic approach towards the clients and their family members. Professional Skills: Students can suggest environment changes, teaching aids, toys and rules for games for children with certain types of disability. Students can put theoretical knowledge into practice.
