1.-2. The concept of a double turn to language (Wittgenstein, Saussure, Goodman). 3. The relationship between language and image (semiotic and semantic). 4. Image and triad: sign, symbol, expression (Peirce, division already overcome: icon, index, symbol). 5. Image and relational dynamic field (denotation, exemplification, expression; Goodman, Mitchell). 6. Relationships of different symbolic systems (sound, visual, gestural, linguistic). 7. Functions and differences of media, notation systems (authenticity, plagiarism, copy, document). 8. Expression, its contextual field, genesis of the concept, examples of works of the 20th and 21st centuries. 9-10 Metaphor, generic level, role of context, limits of interpretation, examples of works of the 21st century. 11-12 Creation of the meaning of the work, analysis of selected works, difference in structure - description of the work.

The subject deals with the relationship between the visual and textual symbolic system, which is widely researched in the age of media. If the term "turn to language" (Rorty) has already become widespread, the concept of "turn to image" (Mitchell) can also be found. These paradigms are part of a wide range of theory and practice dealing with images, language, words, discourses, visuality as such, objects, media, but also institutions. Among broader theoretical questions, this course deals with the mediality of the work, where it introduces the terms symmetry and asymmetry of the process of symbolization, and metaphorical shift both in the work itself and in the interpretation. It therefore explains the relationship between notational systems (alphabet, numbers, musical notation) based on the principle of separateness and thus distinguishable, versus the continuous "patterns" (Goodman 2007) of the real world in visual works.
