The course is devoted to the long period from the 6th century BC to the late Roman Republic and Early Empire with an emphasis on the diachronic line. It focuses on essential developmental turning points, changes in thinking and related representations (e.g. the archaic period, "the Greek revolution", Hellenism: imitation, representational and non-representational art, transformation of the canon), which are reflected in geographical, political, economic, social and cultural ties both in the multicultural regions of the ancient world and in outside influences. Emphasis will be placed on history of material culture and representation in visual arts, as well as the possibility of their later grasp within archeology and related updates in art and culture of the 19th and 20th centuries. Presentation of examples will be mainly based on manuals École du Louvre (Holtzmann, Pasquiere, 1998, and Baratte, 2011). The division of individual sessions (Hölscher, 2002) focuses on two basic areas: 1.) Greece: Chronology, Topography of Athens, Public architecture, Temples, Sculpture, Vase painting, Tombs and painting, Mosaics, 2.) Rome: Chronology, Etruscan art, Topography of Rome, Public buildings, Temples, Sculpture, Historical reliefs, Sarcophagi, Painting and mosaics (Pompeii).
The gained capabilities constitute an encompassment and an aquirement of knowledge and experience in the given field of study, they result from a concrete annotation of the subject and are aimed at a profile´s fulfilment of the graduate of the given field of study.
