Course content
1. Public art - Vasil Artamonov, Jiří Kovanda, Lukáš Rittstein, Martin Zet, David Černý, Ládví Group, and social intervention - Pode Bal, Rafani, and Ztohoven groups, Kateřina Šedá. 2. Today's youngest generation, the phenomena of DIY and games, object and installation - the post-conceptual tendency of Czech art at the beginning of the 21st century - Pavla Sceranková, Eva Koťátková, Dominik Lang, Magdalena Kwiatkowska, Jan Nálevka and others. 3. Political art - Guma Guar, Rafani and Pode Bal groups. 4. Significant photography shows: Month of Photography in Bratislava (SK), Month of Photography in Paris and Paris Photo (FR), Arles Photography Festival (FR), FotoFest in Houston, Moscow Photo Biennale (RU), International Festival of Photography in Łódź (PL) and others. Czech galleries presenting photography and new media. Periodicals Flash art, Umělec, Fotograf, Imago and others. World shows of contemporary art: Venice Biennale, Documenta in Kassel, Manifesta and others. 5. Influence of subcultures on the youngest art - Jakub Hošek andAnežka Hošková, Laďa Gažiová and others, Street art Point, Masker, Pasta, pash*, Bior and others, names fest 2008, confrontation of Czech street art with the world. 6. Learning outcomes
The course is intended fro student who have completed the courses of history of art, and history of applied art, and therefore, it focuses especially on issues of industrial and graphic design. The aim of the course is to provide a historical overview of the origin and development of design as a phenomenon linked with industrial mass production and information technologies, and to define clearly its position in the sphere of artistic and material culture. Great attention is as well paid to general development of modern civilization, technologies, and the importance of visual influence on material culture in broader context. Necessary part of the course is clarification of terminology, the term 'design' itself compared to applied art and art handicraft. The course has a form of lectures and seminars, being scheduled as necessary according to thematic areas, as well as current topics as integral part of the academic debate on the contents of a continuously developing subject. The course includes lectures by outcollege experts and guests, excursions and work in the field. Main thematic areas for winter semester: 1/Introduction to the issues, defining terms, 2/Origin of industrial design, 3/Design of 18th and 19th centuries, 4/Design of early 20th century.
The student has a notion and demonstrates knowledge of relevant literature, periodicals, web sources, and institutions. The student is able to understand the current trends and knows remarkable representatives of the branch, design studios, manufacturers, and design and graphic design shows. The student can prepare, defend, and present a presentation in a written and visual form focused on a specific manufacturer, studio, or personality that according to the student, are remarkable representatives of the discipline the student is specialized in.
