Course content
1. Introductory seminar: familiarization with the problematics and logistic of the university subject. 2. Czech as an artifact of the millennium (800-1800). 3. The beginnings of modern Czech - 19th century. The turn of the century as the final phase of revival. Nationwide literacy. 4. Inter-war phase, the new requirements of an independent state, the old (purism) and new (internationality of the Prague School). Theory of language culture and exemplary author (K. Čapek). 5. Position of czech language in the time of German occupation - allowed and not allowed. 6. Positives and negatives in the development of society and language in 50s and 60s. 7. Czech of 70s and 80s. Ideological conception of "democratization" as a thick line after "capitalist" history. 8. Development from the 90's. New postsocialistic democracy in language. Leading role of media, non-intervention of bohemists. 9. Participation of foreign languages, including Slovak - positives and negatives. 10. The concept of linguistic ecology. Language ethics and its Czech tradition. Question about extinction of languages - Will Czech survive the 21st century? 11. Contemporary stratification of language: dialects, general Czech, micro-languages, issues of czech-slovak; practical and above standard language styles, their role in society and its layering. 12. Integration of european languages: language euro-area, place of Czech as Slavonic yet west euro-language. 13. Closing seminar - summary and evaluation.

Learning outcomes
The focus of this course is to acquaint the listener with basic stabillity and variabillity of contemporary czech language including basic data of last 5 generations, i. e. from the turn of the 19th and 20th century. The context of geopolitical and cultural development is taken into account. The survey focuses on the questions of the role of language in the national community, alongside the language system, its changes, its impact on society in terms of language attitudes of its bearers. Language is not only communication, but also the environment (language environment). Included is a multivariate stratification of czech language, the issue of the influence of foreign languages including Slovak, their positive and negative aspects. The problem of integration of European languages (Euro-linguistics) and of perspective of the existence of Czech in 21st century are newly included.
Student knows the basic concepts of dynamism of Czech, its historical, internal and external codification (political, foreign language) stimulus. He is able to perceive the difference between the communication function of language, its internal structure and ability to be the environment of man.
