Course content
1. Introduction seminar: basic information about problems and logistics of a university subject; 2. Czech language as an artefact of one millennium (800-1800) 3. Beginnings of modern Czech language - Nineteenth century; The end of nineteenth century as a final phase of Czech national revival; Nationwide literacy 4. A phase between world wars, new requirements of separated state, old (purism) and new (world-fame of Prague linguistic school); Theory of language culture and model writer Charles Čapek; 5. Situation of Czech language during German occupation - allowed and prohibited 6. Positives and negatives in the development of language in 50s and 60s; 7. Czech language in 70s and 80s; ideology conception of "democratisation" as a bold line after "capitalistic" past 8. Development of language since 90s; New post-communistic democracy; Role of mass-media, non-interventions of Czech language teachers; 9. The term: Language ecology; Language ethics and its Czech tradition 10. Contemporary stratification of language; dialects, inter-dialect, micro-languages; problems of Czechoslovak language; 11. Practical and above-standard language styles, their role in society and its stratification; 12. Participation of other (foreign) languages including Slovak language - positives and negatives 13. Problem of determination of languages - will Czech survive 21st century (?); 14. Integration of European languages: Euro-area of language; Czech as a Slavic euro-language

Learning outcomes
The subject´s aim is to teach a basic knowledge about stability and variability of contemporary Czech language including basic information about the situation since five generations ago, that means since the end of nineteenth and the beginning of twentieth century. Subject´s content takes account of context of geopolitical and cultural progress. Study concentrates on questions and tasks of language in a community of one nation - in the context of language system, its changes, and its influence over the society even in the way of forming people´s language attitudes. Language, that is not just a communication, it is an environment (language ecology). The subject includes level language stratification of Czech, problems about influence of other languages including Slovak (positive as well as negative aspects). Finally, there is one new topic: Problem of integration of European languages (Euro-linguistics), prospects of Czech language future in 21st century. Student can get credit when absolving written test at the end of a semester.
Graduate of this course takes away with himself comprehensive awareness of the importance of literary czech language as the fundamental unit of the national language, its reality as a basic feature of written communication and public (even pedagogical) performance, but also as a feature of national identity, including a representative function and the euro linguistic function.
