Course content

1. Literary text in its ambiguity; description, analysis, interpretation. 2. Structuralism. Artefact and aesthetic object. Concretization. 3. New criticism. Close reading. Intentional fallacy. 4. Reader-oriented theory. Interpretive communities, readerly and writerly text. 5. Marxism. New historicism. 6.-13. Collective interpretations of particular texts. 14. Final seminar, credit test, students' evaluation.

Learning outcomes
|
In first couple of course lessons students familiarize with central paradigms of literary-interpretative methodology (arising from specialized texts reading), seminars in the second half of course focus almost exclusively on development of practical interpretative ability. Attention is gradually focused on interpretation of various literary genres (e.g. folk literature books, poetry of J. Vrchlický, K. Toman, V. Holan, short stories of J. Neruda and J. Škvorecký, cliftonky ("clifton stories") from Digital archive of popular literature of Institute of Czech Literature), whereas students mutually confront their explanations of meaning of literary text and they are collectively trying to find an interpretative field which would correspond to the "process of sense " of analysed pieces. Course members mutually familiarize with their observations, even hyper-interpretative, they are searching guarantees for their claims in the text, they are discussing their opinions. Credit is given for active participation in seminar + individual performance.
Absolvents of the course orient in selected methodological trends of 20th century which they do not understand as canonical dogmas but as intellectual constructs. Students understood basic terminology which they are able to use productively for their own interpretation of literary texts.
