Course content

The Czech National Corpus http://ucnk.ff.cuni.cz/. Basic professional literature. Linguistic terminology (dictionaries). 2. Linguistics and its disciplines. General characteristic of the Czech Language - part 1. 3. General characteristic of the Czech Language - part 2. Its specific features. 4. Language and speech. Language units, language system and its structure. Language subsystems (layers) and their relations. Diachrony and synchrony. 5. Written form of language and grammar. Spoken form of language and pronunciation. 6. Czech national language and its social and regional stratification. Standard language and its stratification. 7. Non-standard structures of national language and its relations to the standard Czech language. 8. Language usage. Norm and codification of the standard language. Codification guides in regard to lexicology, orthography and grammar. 9. Language culture. 10. Developmental tendencies of the present Czech Language. 11. Periodization of the Czech language development. 12. Development of linguistic Czech studies. 13. - 14. Linguistic Czech studies in the 20th century.

Learning outcomes
This subject involves introducing students to problems of individual linguistic levels (its units and relations), increasing their knowledge of the linguistic terminology, providing them a brief insight into basic linguistic disciplines which will be more specified during the study, clarifying and deepening their current understanding of language. Seminars focus on improving student's theoretic knowledge and its usage in a linguistic analysis of present language occurrences. Final examination has a written form
Students are able to consider language as a structuralised and hierarchized system, to use and understand basic linguistic terms, to think about connections between language phenomena and to use basic processes in the analysis of language units.
Prerequisites
knowledge of the field on the level of GCSE exam knowledge of disciplines connected to the central domain of study knowledge of appropriate terminology
