Course content
1. 90s of 19th century. Symbolism and decadence. Moderní revue. New type of criticism. Březina, Hlaváček, Sova, Šalda. 2. Lyrical prose and drama. Mrštík, Svobodová, Těsnohlídek, Šrámek, Mahen etc. 3. From Snu zástupu zoufajících (S. K. Neumann) to poetry of so-called buřiči, Šrámek, Toman, Kellner. 4. Prose of anarchistic generation. Hašek, Olbracht. Authors of first wave of expressionism: Klíma, Deml. 5. Neoclassicism. Čapek brothers, Dyk, Langer etc. Polemic with individualism in prose during the World War I (WWI). 6. Literature reflecting WWI. Hašek. Legionary literature. 7. Literature expressing vision of new world. Proletkult. Proletarian poetry. Hora, Wolker etc. 8. Birth of avant-garde. Relation to European literature, role of Čapek's translations of French poetry, Neumann's Červen Děvětsil and it connections to European avant-garde. Teige. 9. Poetism: Nezval, Seifert, Halas, Závada. 10. 20s poetism and avant-garde prose. Vančura, Čapek. 11. 30s poetry. Halas. Holan. Zahradníček. Rynek etc. 12. 30s prose. Authors and genres. Durych. Rural writers. Psychological novel. 13. Surrealism, its birth, European connections, events in 40s and 50s. 14. Literature during WWII.

Learning outcomes
Lectures trace basic tendencies and trends of Czech literature from the end of 19th century to the late 20s of 20th century. Literary development is presented on the background of historical events and cultural political situation - local and European, on selected examples shows connections of Czech literature with period trends of developed European cultures - not only in literature but also visual art. Seminars are drawn with stress on analysis and interpretation of selected pieces of crucial authors, poets, prosaists and dramatists. Part of seminar syllabi is to introduce relative specialized literature and basic literary historical works.
Student acquires basic knowledge about development of Czech literature in the 1st half of 20th century. Student gets familiar with crucial authors and art movements. Student gets familiar with the most significant pieces originated in this period and even basic specialized literature.
Prerequisites
knowledge of the field on the level of GCSE exam knowledge of disciplines connected to the central domain of study knowledge of appropriate terminology
