Learning outcomes
This discipline thematically deals with studying old periods of Czech language (Proto-Czech, Old and Middle Czech), with partial dialectological excursions and comparison among present day Czech material. The central part of interpretations of Historical Grammar I will be dedicated to phonetics. Part of the course is an overview of Czech historical grammars, esp. from its methodological and material point of view. Goal of this subject is to understand an old Czech text and changes in system of specific language levels. Fundamental part of the educational programme is an analysis of particular old Czech texts. Historical development description of Czech language is necessary for the present day Czech language study.
Students are able to characterize Czech language from the genetic classification point of view; can give a coherent overview of developmental phases of the Czech language from the Proto-Slavonic basis to present days; describe basic phonological tendencies to the era of the New Czech language and analyze esp. phonological features in the material of chosen Old Czech texts; can give an overview of responses of the old state in Czech dialects and grammatically correct Czech language, esp. the phonological state. Students can orientate in old and present professional literature; work with professional production (esp. with Old Czech grammars), work with lexicographical handbooks (for example vocabularies); analyze material on the basis of lexicographical handbooks and from the etymological point of view, analyze Old Czech text from the phonological point of view; can work independently and under the leadership.
