1. Definition of literature; nature of literature. 2. Function of literature. 3. Literature as a sign. 4. Speech acts and literature. 5. Literary science: theory - history - critics. 6. Literary and scientific methodologies. 7. Literary types and genres. Epic. 8. Novel and epic poetry. Genre variations, middle and minor epic. 9. Lyric genres. 10. Drama genres. 11. History of literature - terms of the era, literary movements, literary groups. 12. Literary historiography. 13. Basic guides, magazines, institutions. 14. Final seminar, credit test, student assessment.

Learning outcomes
|
Lectures and seminars give students basic information about general questions of literary science. It informs about definition of literature, description of its nature (through terms, for example the aesthetic, fictionality, intertextuality, poetic language, symbolism etc.) and clarification of its functions. Students learn basic knowledge about problems, structure and terminology of literary science which will be useful for the further study of (esp. Czech) literature. Examination has a written form.
Students understand problems of the study of literature; know its specification in the system of arts; can structuralize the system of literature threw proper terminological funds; adopt basic knowledge of the field of literary theory and history, understand changes in the subject according to social and cultural contexts. Students also know sources of literary knowledge (basic academic literature, specialized magazines, libraries, archives).
