Course content
1. Natural lakes and man-made lakes. Origin and forms of lakes. 2. Physical limnology: Light and heat in lakes, water movements. 3. Chemical limnology: oxygen, major ions, pH and inorganic carbon. N, P, Fe, S, and Si cycles. 4. Planktonic communities: Phytoplankton, Zooplankton and their interactions with fish. 5. Bacteria and detritus. Littoral communities. Benthos, Periphyton. 6. Onthogeny of aquatic ecosystems and human impact upon them: eutrophiocation, acidification, contaminants. High mountain lakes as indicators of atmospheric pollution. Sedimantation, sediments, palaeolimnology. Flowing waters: 7. Water flow and stream channels. Physical and chemical characteristics of flowing water. 8. Communities of flowing waters: attached algae, higher plants, benthic invertebrates, fish. 9. Longitudinal zonation, the river continuum. 10. Special aquatic habitats: 11. Saline waters, groundwaters, astatic waters, intersticial habitats, peat bogs.

Learning outcomes
It is carried out in a seminary form, with active contribution of the students. The course contents characteristics of both standing and flowing waters, their physical and chemical parameters, communities (zooplankton, phytoplankton, benthos, littoral, the community of plants and animals that are attached to or move about on the surfaces of submerged stems, leaves, rocks, sticks, plants, fish), sediments and paleolimnology.
