Course content
Geobotany as an ecological discipline. Historical and recent approaches. Structure and function of plant communities. Species diversity. Measuring diversity. Island biogeography theory. Abiotic and biotic factors. Plant life-forms. Biodiversity gradients. Principles of population ecology. Species pattern in plant communities. Consequences to plant conservation. Dynamics of plant communities. Climax theory. Primary and secondary succession. Syntaxonomy, Zurich-Montpellier school. Vegetation classification. Analysis of vegetation data (Turboveg, Juice, etc.). Application of GIS in geobotany. Vegetation history, history of landscape types, habitats and vegetation types. Distribution of plant communities: Europe, Czech Republic, Northern Bohemia. Applied geobotany, vegetation mapping, application of geobotany in nature conservation and forestry.
